LEGO Marvel 76292 Captain America vs. Red Hulk Battle review

One of three initial LEGO Marvel sets based on next year’s first MCU movie, 76292 Captain America vs. Red Hulk Battle is a less-than-patriotic addition to the superhero theme.

Landing on big screens around the world on February 14, 2025, Captain America: Brave New World is a first for a number of reasons. For starters, the film will feature the cinematic debut of Anthony Mackie’s iteration of the star-spangled Avenger, Harrison Ford stepping into the MCU to replace the late William Hurt as Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross and the arrival of the fiery rage machine that is the Red Hulk.

Details regarding the fourth Captain America movie are still being kept tightly under wraps, with only a single teaser trailer having been released to date. In advance of the film’s release, a trio of LEGO Marvel sets based on the movie are launching on December 1, which includes 76292 Captain America vs. Red Hulk Battle.

However, even with excitement mounting for Captain America: Brave New World in the months to come, there’s really only one big crimson reason to pick up this LEGO Marvel model.

Poorly crafted

Not knowing what to expect from Captain America: Brave New World as source material makes reviewing sets spinning out of the MCU movie a little tricky. We can really only go by what we can see, plus an official listing on LEGO.com, but truth be told, that’s not a lot.

The main model included in 76292 Captain America vs. Red Hulk Battle is a brick-built fighter jet that wouldn’t look out of place in a LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy set. Think of it as a poor man’s Avengers Quinjet and you’re on the right track. In addition there are all-new minifigures of Sam Wilson’s Captain America, Joaquin Torres’s Falcon, Ruth Bat-Seraph and a burly Red Hulk bigfig.

The fighter jet is an uninspired craft, one that looks way more exciting than it really is. In fact the vehicle is as basic as you can get, with swept-back wings firmly fixed in position, an opening cockpit, two stud shooters and a hidden cargo storage compartment behind a door that doesn't even feature a hinge.

76292 Captain America vs. Red Hulk Battle’s plane offers very little play and even less display potential, with a lack of excitement or functionality really letting the set down. With that being the case, you’d think there’d be an opportunity for the LEGO Marvel model’s minifigures to shine, but alas they also lack any real superhero energy.

Less-than heroic

Sam Wilson’s Captain America gets a new printed helmet and double-sided printed head, but only part of Anthony Mackie’s face can be seen peeking out of one side. As with 76296 New Captain America Construction Figure, this version of the character appears to be sporting some kind of high-altitude survival costume and comes complete with semi-articulated wings, plus a shield and removable Redwing drone that’s merely a stickered triangle element.

Hiding Mackie’s face behind one side of his printed face (and when wearing his helmet) also seems at odds with his version of Captain America being featured so prominently on the packaging for the upcoming LEGO Marvel sets, but at least his minifigure gets dual-moulded legs.

The MCU’s new Falcon gains his first-ever minifigure and a set of brick-built wings, yet is only marginally more interesting than the minifigure of Ruth Bat-Seraph, who's apparently a former Black Widow and high-ranking US official in Captain America: Brave New World. The latter character is the only minifigure in the set to feature any leg printing whatsoever, the absence of which is a common complaint with many LEGO Marvel sets.

Price point may make you angry

That just leaves the model’s Red Hulk to save the day, with the film’s worst-kept secret being 76292 Captain America vs. Red Hulk Battle’s main selling point. The new Red Hulk bigfig (only the second created to date) has more refined printed tattered trousers than the previous version of the character and a moveable head with one printed expression, but no touches of grey hair or stubble to link him to his on-screen presidential counterpart’s alter ego.

Less than an hour into building 76292 Captain America vs. Red Hulk Battle you’ll have completed the set and be left scratching your head as to exactly what your money has been spent on. In addition to the lacklustre build and mostly average minifigures, the LEGO Marvel model also comes with 16 stickers, many of which are fiddly to attach and some of which could have easily been printed pieces.

The main sticking point with 76292 Captain America vs. Red Hulk Battle though has to be its hefty price, which gets you a basic vehicle and only one must-have bigfig. The high cost of the set seems even more unreasonable when considering that 76078 Hulk vs. Red Hulk launched in 2017 for £54.99 / $59.99 / €59.99 and came with two chunky vehicles, two minifigures and two bigfigs.

With little context with which to approach 76292 Captain America vs. Red Hulk Battle, plus an uninspired vehicle and a lacklustre minifigure selection, there’s little to recommend when it comes to potentially purchasing the set – especially for its blistering price tag of £49.99 / $54.99 / €54.99. We can only hope that a version of the Red Hulk bigfig pops up in a more affordable and fun LEGO Marvel set somewhere down the line, but this sure isn’t it.
