A guide to the black and white frames of LEGO Art

The latest LEGO Art reveal appears to have confirmed a trend in the theme when it comes to the black and white frames used in the sets.

Among the many exciting reveals at LEGO CON 2022, 31207 Floral Art was announced as the latest model in LEGO Art. It's also the smallest build in the range so far, depicting a flower-focused mosaic that measures 40cm high and 27cm across, meaning it's about two-thirds the size of usual LEGO Art mosaics.

That smaller size also means that 31207 Floral Art is less expensive than any other set in the theme at £59.99 / $79.99 / €69.99. Looking at official images of the model, you might have noticed the white frame that surrounds the mosaic space. This is in line with other builds in the theme, though LEGO Art models have been known to use both white and black frames.

Judging by official examples of LEGO Art sets released so far, it appears that licensed models use the black frames while anything original is surrounded by white elements. It acts as a good way to differentiate between the various entries in LEGO Art, and so far white has arguably better suited the brightly-coloured 31203 World Map, 21226 Art Project and 31207 Floral Art.

Even the only non-mosaic entry in LEGO Art – 31206 The Rolling Stones – has featured a black outline and base. Time will tell if this trend continues but for now, it seems that the LEGO Art design team will continue to use black frames for licensed builds and white frames for original models.
