Captain Rex has finally returned to LEGO Star Wars in 75367 Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser – but how triumphant is his reveal?
This is the first time we've seen Captain Rex as a minifigure since 2016 and even then he was an old grizzled version of himself, as seen in 75157 Captain Rex's AT-TE. If we're talking full-armoured, young Rex, then we have to go all the way back to 2012 and 75012 BARC Speeder with Sidecar (complete with eerie LEGO The Clone Wars wide eyes).
At first glance, 75367 Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser's Captain Rex is a decent minifigure all round, from his cloth pauldron to the new printing for his arms, legs, and torso. Naturally, his helmet comes with his signature tally marks printed on it, but LEGO Star Wars fans against the holes on the side of the helmet should probably look away (it has them). Of course, this does mean you can attach Rex's distinctive rangefinder for extra authenticity.

The details are solid, but for such an expensive set with just two minifigures, it would have been good to see a cloth kama rather than a printed one. You could even mistake the printed details on the legs for extra weapons rather than a kama, with them appearing almost comically small below Rex's standard weapons belt.
Taking off the helmet reveals a head printed with a scar on the side, a sign that this is Rex after he's removed his inhibitor chip. Considering 75367 Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser is believed to be a Clone Wars-era version of Anakin Skywalker's Resolute, this doesn't quite add up, as Ahsoka only removed Rex's chip in the midst of Order 66, just before he fled to start a new life, eventually fighting for the Rebels and believed dead by the majority of those who knew him.

With that in mind, and by the nature of 75367 Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser being an anniversary set, it seems that the LEGO Group has chosen to capture the spirit of the Clone Wars, rather than cementing the ship as a specific moment. Unlike, say, 75192 Millennium Falcon which includes specific minifigures to anchor it to two points of the Star Wars timeline, 75367 elects to feature a recognisable admiral from a famous Venator (Yularen) and one of the most beloved characters from this era of the franchise in Rex.
All in all, it's great to see Captain Rex return. For such a highly-anticipated minifigure, however, the fact that there are some small gripes to pick on may lead to a rather lacklustre reception. It's virtually impossible to tick every box, but fine-tuning the last few details like a cloth kama would have perfected an otherwise solid but rather standard minifigure.
