CNN explores LEGO culture and the ‘power of the brick’

The creative and captivating world of LEGO has been explored by CNN, with the US news network shining a spotlight on the magic behind the global phenomenon.

US news network CNN has taken a deep dive into the world of LEGO with its Underscored Explores series, talking to employees, fan builders and collectors alike. The latest video instalment takes viewers on a journey that starts at the flagship LEGO Store Fifth Avenue in New York, in an attempt to discover why the brand has become such a global phenomenon.

CNN Underscored’s Associate Editor, Jillian Tracy, dips her toe into the brick-based world of LEGO, chatting with a variety of interviewees, including Christopher Lee (aka DuckBricks) about his LEGO MASTERS win, the 9,234 sets he currently has in his collection and his hope to eventually open his own LEGO museum.

The fan builder reveals what happened during his journey on the Fox TV show, with his final 24 hour build ultimately resulting in a physical LEGO release in the shape of 41838 Travel Moments.

Along the way, Jillian meets passionate fans who have taken their love for LEGO to the next level, talking to enthusiastic individuals who have gone on to work for the Danish company and kids whose models were part of last year’s LEGO Space UPO drone show in New York City.

On hand to talk about the company is LEGO Group historian, Signe Wiese, who chats about the origins of the humble LEGO brick itself and how the interlocking principle behind the plastic elements has been a key factor in the brand’s longevity and success.

Thanks to the advice of Flagship Senior Store Manager, Rachel Black, the CNN reporter also tries her hand at building a LEGO set for the first time, revealing what it was like to assemble 10334 Retro Radio.
