LEGO Ideas 21365 Love Birds is based on fan designer ModularManiac's original model, but how much has changed since its first iteration?
Like any LEGO Ideas set, the newly revealed 21365 Love Birds comes from an original fan design. In this case, it's ModularManiac's entry in 2024's ‘Build from the Heart’ contest, which was originally made up of 411 pieces.
Due for release on January 1, the final set has 750 pieces, almost twice as many as the first submission. While the core concept of two birds sitting in a tree remains the same, here's a closer look at comparing the final set to the original idea.
Smoothing out the birds
Although some of the building techniques have remained the same (the use of clip elements for feet that allows them to 'stand' on the tree branches, for one), there are also various changes that have managed to both smooth out the birds' silhouettes and add extra depth.
Rather than them being made up of almost all coral parts, the final birds include shades of salmon throughout the bodies and a touch of medium nougat for the beak. This colour switch breaks up the build, while also being more representative or real-life song birds, which are rarely all one colour.
The bodies and wings are also smoothed out, particularly around the neck and tail feathers. On the head, curved slopes are used on the sides instead of angled ones, leaving less of the underlying bricks exposed and creating a smoother overall look.
Curved slopes are also layered up on the tail, creating a sturdier element that likely improves structural integrity and also makes the birds appear more solid.
A pop of colour in the trees
The trunk of the tree appears to have remained largely the same, but the leaves have been switched up from shades of pink and pale purple to shades of green. Those colours pop a lot better next to the pink birds, offering more variety in the LEGO Ideas set.
There's also more greenery included in the set overall, with extra leaves scattered over the trunk of the tree and towards the base, whereas the original only included leaves and flowers on the ends of the branches.
These changes, while small, help to create a more well-rounded set, both in terms of build techniques and colours. To see how that plays out for yourself, you can pick up 21365 Love Birds for £44.99 / $49.99 / €49.99 upon its release on January 1, 2026.
