A young LEGO fan born with a limb difference has received a custom LEGO prosthetic with integrated plates to greatly expand the play possibilities.
A heartwarming story from the Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust last weekend has revealed a custom LEGO prosthetic designed specifically for eight-year-old LEGO fan Tobi. Tobi was born with a limb difference and has frequently visited the Portsmouth Enablement Centre since he was six months old.
The centre works to create custom prosthetic devices, working with Tobi to create an incredible custom prosthetic that does more than simply print pieces onto the device. The team at the centre have managed to integrate a pair of LEGO plates into the prosthetic, to allow Tobi to build directly onto his new arm. It's sure to be a dream come true for Tobi.
“Every device we make is bespoke," shared Lucy Riddle, Prosthetics Clinical Manager at the Portsmouth Enablement Centre. We work closely with each individual to ensure not only a comfortable fit but also a design that reflects their personality.
"Both are equally important to a person’s confidence and well-being. Our technicians enjoy being creative, whether it’s crafting limbs with superhero designs or incorporating family photos, and the biggest reward is seeing the difference it makes to someone’s life.”
Images of Tobi and his new prosthetic have been shared on Facebook, and you can learn more about the Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust on their website.
“The care Tobi receives from the team is phenomenal," said Tobi’s mum, Debra. "Wayne, Jo and Dan (of the centre) go above and beyond. They really listen to what Tobi wants and do everything they can to make it happen.
"His new LEGO-themed arm has been amazing—not only is it helping with everyday tasks, but he loves showing it off. Most importantly, the team always makes sure Tobi feels included every step of the way. We couldn’t ask for better care, and we’re so thankful for everything they do.”
Official LEGO prosthetics have come a long way in recent years, but they're currently a lot smaller than Tobi's bespoke creation.
