LEGO designers explain decisions behind 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1

The first LEGO The Legend of Zelda set is coming later this year and ahead of its launch, its designers have explained the decisions behind the set.

A new article on the official online store has shared the decisions that went into designing 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1. There's also some insight from designers Wes Talbott and Austin William Carlson as to why they opted for a 2-in-1 model as the debut build for the franchise.

The two builds available in 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 are different versions of the Great Deku Tree, as depicted in Breath of the Wild and Ocarina of Time with a pair of minifigures to match each model.

The tree character appears in a fair few of the Legend of Zelda games and usually plays an important role in Link's journey and in collaboration with Nintendo, this played a huge part in the reasoning behind choosing the Great Deku Tree as the first build for The Legend of Zelda.

"The Great Deku Tree is big and beautiful, and it’s also a recurring character, which was important to me." shared Wes. The designer also explained how they started their The Legend of Zelda journey with Ocarina of Time, adding personal value to the model.

Another discussion that was had in deciding that the set would be a 2-in-1 build was how the team would make it stand out compared to other sets and merchandise.

"My driving question was: how can we provide something unique and special that no one else can? And the simple and obvious answer was, well, building!’ explains Austin.

"We worked with the Nintendo team," continued Wes. "Concepting with them truly felt like we were creating the perfect blend of the Legend of Zelda and LEGO bricks!"

Splitting the set into two different eras via a rebuild also offered the opportunity to include more minifigures relating to both the most recent era of the franchise and one with Link in his iconic green tunic.

The quotes from the designers help explain why 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 is a 2-in-1 model and much of the transformation and rebuilding process has yet to be revealed, including what models are left unaffected, if any.

We'll know more when 77092 Great Deku Tree 2-in-1 releases on September 1 but pre-orders are open now for £259.99 / $299.99 / €299.99.
