LEGO Mario has grown quite a bit in the past five years, ranging from an electronic figure to an 8-bit piece to a baby and now to a buildable model.
Today's reveal of 72037 Mario & Standard Kart adds another non-minifigure version of the iconic plumber to the list of LEGO Mario iterations, demonstrating just how far the LEGO Group has come with the character since the first electronic figure in 2020. Everything from 8-bit Mario to Baby Mario and now modern Mario has been covered in a surprisingly comprehensive collection of figures based on the iconic character.
You can head here to find out more about the upcoming Mario Kart model – with pre-orders open now during a double points event – and then come back for a guide on the many versions of LEGO Mario from the past five years.
Electronic
Featured in 2020's 71360 Adventures with Mario Starter Course and the more recent 71439 Adventures with Interactive LEGO Mario, Mario's first and most interactive figure has a unique cubic shape that might not be to everyone's taste, and this design philosophy has affect the shape of many of the other LEGO Super Mario figures in the course-building sets.
8-bit
One month after the debut of the theme came 71374 Nintendo Entertainment System with a new and exclusive 8-bit Mario element to traverse the level on the television. It remains exclusive to the retired LEGO Super Mario set and it's specific usage makes it unlikely to appear anywhere else.
Tiny
As part of 71395 Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block in 2021, the smallest LEGO Mario figure to date was featured using just three elements and one print. Despite its size, this is still undoubtedly the gaming icon.
16-bit
Moving to 2024, LEGO Mario evolved from an 8-bit element to a 16-bit build in 71438 Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi, where the LEGO Group dedicated many elements to accurate capturing a specific sprite of the character riding atop Yoshi.
Baby
As part of the LEGO Mario Kart models in 2025, Baby Mario has made his debut as a buildable figure in the style of the course-building system. While this is a younger version of the character, it certainly still counts for this list and even re-uses the specialised cap element from the electronic figure.
Buildable
The modern version of Mario is finally being accurately depicted later this year in 72037 Mario & Standard Kart, with much of the 1,972-piece build dedicated to a figure of the character sitting down in the standard kart. This figure can move its head and arms but is otherwise attached to the vehicle.
