Every open-mouth LEGO animal costume ahead of Series 28

Every open-mouth LEGO animal costume ahead of Series 28

A full series of LEGO animal costumes in a specific style is right around the corner, but they're far from the first in this costume collection.

The concept of LEGO animal costumes in minifigure form is nothing new, ahead of 71051 Series 28 Animals. That new series is launching on January 1, 2025, with 12 costumed minifigures to collect. They're adding a lot of new animal costumes to the mix, following the most common style of LEGO animal costume to keep things consistent.

Even limited to the specific open-mouth animal costume style, the full list of every LEGO animal costume ever released is extensive, dating back to 2011. Here's a look at that list, featuring only costumes where the minifigure's head is depicted in the animal's open mouth.

2011 to 2015

2011 inadvertently started the trend with the Lizard Man in 8805 Series 5. A gorilla costume launched in the same year, but follows a different costume style. It wasn't until 2013 that the LEGO Group saw fit to explore the open-mouth style further with a chicken suit as part of the Series 9 minifigures.

Fast forward to 2014 and Series 12's Pig Guy brought a pig costume to the collection, which would return later. In 2015, the LEGO Group added the Unicorn Girl from 71008 Series 13, as the collection continued to grow. The next five years would see some major growth for the range.

2016 to 2020

71011 Series 15 from 2016 expanded things with a shark and penguin costume. The range then took a brief rest until 2018's party minifigure series, featuring costumes for a dragon, spider, another unicorn and an elephant. These all followed the open-mouth style, with the spider being by far the most unique.

The release of more LEGO Chinese Traditional Festivals sets in 2019 and 2020 saw the pig costume return, as well as a brand-new mouse costume to pair with the elephant outfit.

Taking a quick trip back to 2018, the Unikitty theme came with some blind-packaged figures, including Dinosaur Unikitty. The presence of eyes and teeth makes this a unique entry into the open-mouth costume collection/ Also unique is 2019's The LEGO Movie Series' giraffe suit minifigure, depicting the head coming out of the neck instead of the mouth.

Considering this animal's proportions, it's an inventive solution to the constraints of minifigures and still belongs in the collection. The fox costume from 71025 Series 19 was much more familiar, though the collection briefly changed again through 2020's Llama costume.

2021 to 2025

In 2021, the LEGO Group expanded the range with many minifigures. This includes a pug costume, a second dragon costume and ones for a reindeer, wolf and turkey from a holiday-themed minifigure series. Don't forget the sneaky raccoon costume from Series 22 in 2022, as well.

It was during these five years that open-mouth animal costumes in standard sets started to become much more common. A LEGO City Stuntz bike introduced a chick costume, while a trio of additional costumes could be found in more LEGO Chinese Traditional Festivals builds for a bull, rabbit and tiger.

2023 brought us another dinosaur costume minifigure, taking inspiration from the LEGO T. rex. The element would go on to be used in 60380 Downtown, as well. A second LEGO dinosaur costume arrived in 2024 via a triceratops, then followed by a third in 2025's Pterodactyl Costume Fan as part of Series 27. This series also debuted a hamster costume.

Looking back towards the standard LEGO sets, there's a different-coloured LEGO penguin costume in 60384 Penguin Slushy Van, another form of dragon costume in 80113 Family Reunion and a polar bear mascot in 60363 Ice Cream Shop.

Similar to the deviation we saw with Unikitty, LEGO Minecraft entered the collection with a bear costume in 2023's 21241 The Bee Cottage. Though pixelated, this outfit still has a character head in the mouth of the bear, making it an odd part of the collection, but part of it nonetheless.

There are a couple in the 2025 LEGO City advent calendar as well, but we won't show images to keep the surprise for anyone who has not opened all 24 doors yet.

LEGO Minecraft 21585 Chicken Farm 17 1200x787

Rounding out this list, next year will see another LEGO animal costume from Minecraft, thanks to a chicken outfit in 21585 Chicken Farm. It's certainly the oddest-looking of the lot so far.

Build-a-Minifigure recolours

The limited nature of LEGO Build-a-Minifigure stations means that any exclusive parts in them won't be as widely accessible as those in minifigure series or standard sets. However, there have been a few animal costume recolours to note, including a blue pug, a pink elephant and a full chick suit inspired by the one in the Stuntz set. There have been other recoloured costumes, but none with the open-mouth style to our knowledge.

71051 Series 28 Animals will be released on January 1, 2026, with each of the blind boxes retailing for £3.49 / $4.99 / €3.99. Click here to take a look at every original, single-theme LEGO minifigure series ahead of the new range coming soon.
