The first LEGO How to Train Your Dragon set has split fans, with some loving the adorable dragon and others finding the concept challenging.

Criticisms of the set so far range from the execution of the Night Fury to the price, with some comparing
Looking at LEGO enthusiasts' first impressions of the set, some, such as SR1847, are disappointed in the set after NINJAGO's many impressive dragon models.
"I will grab it because I want to support LEGO How to Train Your Dragon as that has been my dream license, but seeing how good dragons in NINJAGO are, I wish we got Toothless in that kind of scale / style," explains the user.
Personal-Kiwi4838 agrees with the critique of the proportions, stating, "What on earth convinced the set designer to make a blown up BrickHeadz / Funko pop? With that price tag I was expecting something more faithful?"

The reactions from within the How to Train Your Dragon community echo these criticisms, including some specific complaints regarding the all-black box design combined with the nearly all-black build.
"Why does it look more like a dog than a dragon?" questions boltyss on Reddit.
"I wanted a more movie-accurate look, I don’t get the pet/play look of it for an adult set," agrees StitchScout.

"This has 30 pieces more than LEGO Harry Potter
It's not all negativity following the reveal of
"I don’t mind it," shares Owl_Resident. "He’s adorable. And for just $70, it's fine to buy. Also, people should note that Universal has put out A LOT of 'cute Toothless' merch for this movie, if you’ve been paying attention to what’s been released for Epic Universe and such. I think this is where the LEGO fans might have a bit of a disconnect from what is selling in terms of HTTYD merch. Kids will like this."
Looking at the many other items of Toothless merchandise out there, from plushies to statues, many share these proportions, and this suggests that the concept sells well, despite what some fans might think. While this model closely resembles other Toothless merchandise, it does not resemble other LEGO dragons, but that might be the point.
"There are enough other 'proper dragons' out there for you," states unicorndreamer247, likely referencing the likes of Creator and NINJAGO. "Isn't it nice they made something different?"
