The first LEGO Ideas '90s challenge will soon reveal its finalists and we've picked out five franchises that may stand a chance at being selected.
The first of two LEGO Ideas '90s challenges, both of which will result in a new set to join the list of every LEGO Ideas model in production, is about to enter the voting phase. Between February 10 and 24, LEGO Ideas users can vote for one of up to five builds based on franchises from the 1990s to be turned into an official set. The winner will be announced on June 2 and the judges have already decided which five submissions out of 196 will be up for a chance.
Without seeing the future, we've picked out five projects based on franchises that we believe have a good chance of being picked for a potential LEGO Ideas set, based on previous models and the LEGO Group's past experiences with various licenses. We'll be able to see how our predictions compare to the finalists next week.
The Iron Giant

Brettcuv's take on the classic The Iron Giant animated film is one of the most impressive Iron Giant models submitted for the challenge – but far from the only one. Given the LEGO Group's experience with mechs and robots via NINJAGO and many more themes, the heartwarming animated film would make for a great LEGO Ideas set and this build is especially realistic with rubber grips on the bottom of the feet and four minifigures.
Jumanji

Following the success of
Dragon Ball

While a pair of anime franchises have been especially popular in the first LEGO Ideas '90s challenge, One Piece is already confirmed to be getting a full theme (based on the Netflix adaptation) later this year, leaving just Dragon Ball. The series would be a good fit for the LEGO portfolio, though it is admittedly character-centric. Still, the Kame House offers a simplistic but iconic build and 2PPL has managed to capture it in a display-worthy model that the LEGO Ideas team would be able to adapt accordingly.
Wallace & Gromit

The invention-lead Wallace & Gromit franchise is undoubtedly a good fit for a LEGO set and given the recent release of the new stop-motion film, hopefully the '90s challenge offers the franchise a chance. The Wrong Trousers is the ideal instalment of the franchise to recreate in a LEGO set, as pierselliot suggests, using the newer rollercoaster track to great effect.
Power Rangers

With Voltron already under the LEGO Group's banner via LEGO Ideas, Power Rangers seems like an inevitable franchise for the portfolio. While a Zord or the Megazord would align nicely with the LEGO Group's experience with mechs, their base from the first Power Rangers film would help differentiate a LEGO Ideas Power Rangers set from that of Voltron. Captain_Finn has depicted exactly that in the challenge and we shall have to see whether it is successful after all next week.
