As the 40th anniversary of Return of the Jedi fast approaches, we're looking back at some of our favourite LEGO Star Wars sets based on the iconic movie.
May 25 will be 40 years since the premiere of Return of the Jedi and the LEGO Group has been preparing its own celebrations, releasing two LEGO diorama builds. However, we have a touch of nostalgia and want to take a walk down memory lane.
Return of the Jedi is the source of many iconic scenes that changed the course of Star Wars history, from the final duel between Palpatine, Darth Vader, and Luke Skywalker to the climactic battle on Endor. Here are our four favourite sets based on the final chapter of the original trilogy, one for every decade since it premiered.
4 – 75093 Death Star Final Duel

Despite actually having fewer pieces, 75093 Death Star Final Duel includes more of the Emperor's throne room than 75352 Emperor’s Throne Room Diorama. It includes the stairs and more of the ship itself, as well as two Praetorian Guards for extra flair. While the building techniques may be more simple than modern sets, the extra room and minifigures make for a more in-depth display that captures the dynamics of the scene – as well as offering more room for the Sith and Jedi to make some force-powered jumps.
3 – 75094 Imperial Shuttle Tydirium

With most LEGO Star Wars ships of recent years being collections of grey of different sizes, it's good to remember a time where other colours were also on the menu. This 937-piece set is an impressively accurate recreation of the Lambda Class Shuttle, a ship that doesn't get enough attention in our opinion. Hinges allow the wings to move in its signature way. It also includes three core characters of Leia, Han Solo, and Chewbacca, along with two anonymous Rebel Troopers, making for a well-populated display or play model.
2 – 75020 Jabba's Sail Barge

The minifigures and moulded Jabba steal the show in 75020 Jabba's Sail Barge, with impressive levels of detail carrying through to the cage that R2-D2's in and the specially-moulded head of Ree-Yees and Max Rebo. The ship itself is also pretty good, with clever use of hinged elements depicting the sail barge's structure well. However, it's a shame it's not quite to scale with the minifigures, making it a harder one to display.
1 – 8038 The Battle of Endor

Although 8038 The Battle of Endor is made up of various separate parts, the overall effect is impressive. Combine this with the updated speeder designs from 75353 Endor Speeder Chase Diorama and you've got a pretty impressive build. The working Ewok catapult is a fun interactive element, plus this is a relatively good value way to get your hands on a brick-built AT-ST. The cast of minifigures is also strong, including Leia, Han, Chewbacca, R2-D2, and Wicket among its whopping 12 characters.
