The program lead and general contractor for the LEGO factory in Virginia have been announced, providing an update on the carbon-neutral site.
It has been revealed that Gray|Hourigan has been selected as the general contractor for the LEGO Group's new factory in Virginia, expanding their production in the US with a new carbon-neutral factory. Gray|Hourigan will be responsible for managing the deep foundation and continued site preparation works throughout 2024 for the project to stay on the path to the LEGO Group's production targets
It has also been announced that Preben Elnef is the new permanent program leader and will be responsible for all aspects of the project from the factory’s construction to its opening. The current schedule for the factory has its opening in 2027, around one year later than was originally planned.
“I am excited to join the team," commented Elnef. "This is an important program in support of our mission to inspire and develop kids across the Americas region for generations to come. It is also a step towards operating more sustainably, as we’re building a site designed to minimize energy use. I look forward to continuing our important partnerships in the local community to bring play to more children in Virginia.”
“We are pleased with the progress we’re making with our investment in Virginia and grateful for the continued support from the local community," shared Carsten Rasmussen, Chief Operations Officer. "We are excited Preben has agreed to become the program leader, where the team will benefit from his recent experience establishing our presence in Vietnam and building our second new factory. We are looking forward to partnering with Gray|Hourigan to commence construction work and retain the good momentum we’re seeing across the site.”
The Virginia factory is the latest in the LEGO Group's efforts towards sustainability and is estimated to cost over $1 billion and create 1,760 jobs over 10 years. It will also feature a solar plant consisting of at least 35,000 panels.
