'Inner Child' LEGO movie in works with Universal Pictures

A new LEGO movie is said to be in the works in the form of a comedy from the director of the award-winning film I Love My Dad.

Deadline reports that an elevated comedy from James Morosini is in early development at Universal and The LEGO Group. The movie, titled 'Inner Child' will reportedly be produced by the LEGO Group, and plot details are being kept under wraps.

The source states that the project originated as an original speculative screenplay from Morosini that had nothing to do with LEGO, and was originally an edgier concept written for live-action. Executives at Universal and The LEGO Group are said to have elected to take the material in another direction, visually and otherwise, that is more befitting of the LEGO brand, but liked the screenplay enough to develop it.

Whether this means it would still be live-action, a blend of live-action and animation similar to the original LEGO movies from Warner Bros., or a fully animated feature such as Piece By Piece with Pharrell Williams is unknown at the time of writing.

It joins the live-action NINJAGO movie as the future of the LEGO Group's cinematic endeavours, and the LEGO Group is also working on a live-action LEGO Friends musical special. This new project is likely to be part of the LEGO Group's five-year movie deal with Universal Pictures that started in 2020.
