Inside Out 2 aims for second-highest animated opening of all time

As predicted, Inside Out 2 is on track to earn the second-highest opening for an animated movie of all time, beating The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Deadline reports that Inside Out 2 is on track to earn anywhere between $140 million and $150 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend, coming in just behind Incredibles 2 at $186.2 million at the top spot for an animated movie and ahead of The Super Mario Bros. Movie at $146.3 million.

We previously noted that early reviews suggested that Pixar's latest sequel was going to be a major success and that appears to be exactly the case. Deadline goes on to describe how Inside Out 2's first day (minus the previews) out-performed Barbie's release day at $49 million to $48.2 million.

The LEGO Group has come prepared for Inside Out 2's success with two sets –  40749 Joy, Sadness & Anxiety and 43248 Inside Out 2 Mood Cubes. Whether there could be more in the future will likely depend on whether Inside Out 2 performs well but at this point, it's looking good for the animated sequel.

It will also be interesting to see whether Inside Out 2 can out-perform the Super Mario Bros. Movie over the course of its entire theatrical run, though the Nintendo film has set a particularly lofty goal.

At least the LEGO Group won't be missing out on sales from a potential animated blockbuster as was arguably the case with The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This time, they're prepared for Inside Out 2 whether it's a major success, makes some profit, or has a strong start but ultimately fades into obscurity by only committing to two sets for now.
