LEGO 40634 Icons of Play details confirmed as part of ‘Play Unstoppable’ campaign

The LEGO Group has confirmed the price and release date of 40634 Icons of Play as part of its new ‘Play Unstoppable’ campaign, which is headlined by its first women’s football set.

First revealed through a Japanese Certified Store last week, 40634 Icons of Play includes 899 pieces and 15 minifigures, among whom are four named footballers: Megan Rapinoe, Y?ki Nagasato, Sam Kerr and Asisat Oshoala. It’s also designed to launch the LEGO Group’s ‘Play Unstoppable’ campaign, which ‘aims to challenge stereotypes around play and creative building, and encourage girls to unlock the freedom they need to play without boundaries’.

“Play, both on and off the pitch, helps children explore who they are, build confidence and feel like part of a team,” said Sam Kerr. “It’s one of the reasons why women’s football is one of the fastest growing sports globally, with crowd attendance records being shattered regularly and over 30 million girls now playing the game worldwide.

“But despite the talent of female players and the excitement of the game finally being recognised on the global stage, there are still many stereotypes that surround girls, their hobbies and the way they play that we need to break down. I hope that seeing women like me achieve their dreams inspires girls to believe they are unstoppable when they get to do the things they love.”

40634 Icons of Play includes half a football pitch (so you’ll need two copies for a full field), a spectators’ stand with scoreboard, a winners’ podium and a dug-out for the players. The half-pitch is also topped off with a goal and even a VAR (video assistant referee) station, so you can recreate what are sure to be plenty of controversial moments from this summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup.

As confirmed through listings at LEGO.com, 40634 Icons of Play will launch on June 6, retailing for £89.99 in the UK, $99.99 in the US and €99.99 in Europe.

“When they have the space and freedom to express themselves fully, girls are an unstoppable force in the world. They are playful inventors, curious scientists, daring dreamers and bold adventurers – and that’s exactly what Play Unstoppable is celebrating,” added Julia Goldin, Chief Product and Marketing Officer, the LEGO Group. “For over 65 years, the LEGO Brick has provided endless play possibilities for all children, allowing girls to dream, build and become anything they desire even when society tells them otherwise.

“Women’s football is a powerful reminder of what girls can do when they break free from stereotypes – our four footballers are players at the top of the game. As strong women on and off the pitch, they are inspirations for girls everywhere to realise their potential.”

LEGO fans in Australia will be able to attend an ‘experiential on-ground event’ at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on July 14 to celebrate the launch of the Play Unstoppable campaign. The LEGO Group is setting up a ‘LEGO Play Stadium’ at Australia’s final international match before the World Cup – which will see the Matildas take on France – with a life-sized, 33,000-piece Sam Kerr minifigure build on display.

40634 Icons of Play debuts June 6 exclusively at LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores.
