LEGO Collectible Minifigures 71048 Series 27 includes a new prosthetic arm element that offers a legal way to build a sought-after feature.
Astronomer Kid from 71048 Series 27 has a prosthetic arm, the latest in a long history of minifigure prosthetics and disability aids. The rounded arm has a hand element that can be manually taken on and off – which also means it can be swapped out for other elements as you choose.
Minifigures with blaster or gun arms are often sought after in custom builds but there hasn't been a LEGO-legal way to do it. Instead, some people chose to force LEGO elements together in ways that would put stress on the plastic and eventually end up breaking them.
Now, however, as demonstrated by mattpond on reddit, the fact that the hand of Astronomer Kid is designed to slide on and off means you can easily swap it out as you choose. In this case, adding a cone element gives the effect of a tiny blaster hand.
The fact that it comes on a torso with a space-themed print of a rocket in space means that it lends itself perfectly to some custom astronaut or sci-fi builds. Who hasn't wanted to send a cyborg into brick-built space?
The versatility of the element highlights how greater diversity of elements isn't just good for representation, with those who might have prosthetics themselves able to see themselves in such minifigures, but also offers more creative possibilities for builds and minifigures. The more building options we have, the better.
