The change to cardboard packaging for LEGO Collectible Minifigures might have been controversial, but the expected sustainable impact could make up for it.
The LEGO Group has been making various efforts to become more sustainable, such as switching to sustainable packaging across its operations by 2026, an admittedly unsuccessful attempt to make LEGO bricks from sustainable sources, and investing in plastic waste disposal schemes. As a company centred around plastic products, it's a clear concern for the company in a world where sustainability is an ever-growing issue.
One such change that the LEGO Group has made was the packaging for the LEGO Collectible Minifigures has switched from single-use plastic to recyclable cardboard boxes. While this decision was not received well by fans, with many people destroying boxes in stores to find out which minifigure is inside, the cardboard blind boxes is one step closer to reducing the amount of plastic that the LEGO Group puts out into the world. In fact, the LEGO Group predicts that the global rollout of the new boxes will help the LEGO Group save approximately 30 tons of single-use plastic annually, based on 2022 sales figures.
The LEGO Group isn't slowing down with its sustainable plans, announcing plans in September to triple its investment in environmental sustainability, spending more than $1.4 billion on sustainability-related activities over the next three years. Looking ahead, the ongoing process to replace plastic Pick a Brick cups with cardboard boxes and in-box plastic bags with paper ones is a priority for the company, according to the report.
