LEGO could be going all-in on video game sets this year

Rumours for LEGO Super Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog and Minecraft suggest that this year will be exciting for experienced video game enthusiasts.

According to rumours for the summer 2024 range of Super Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog and Minecraft, each theme is reported to receive an 18+ model, which is usually targeted at a more experienced audience, and they don't necessarily have to be based on mature properties.

For instance, LEGO Super Mario is no stranger to 18+ sets and most recently launched 71426 Piranha Plant. That model is just part of a surprisingly long line of 18+ video game sets from the past four years.

LEGO Super Mario receiving another 18+ model wouldn't be at all surprising all things considered and it's reported to cost $169.99 and be released in October. There's even precedent for an 18+ LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog set, though 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog – Green Hill Zone is a LEGO Ideas set that came before the full theme. The 18+ Sonic the Hedgehog 2024 model is rumoured to have 720 pieces and also arrive in October.

The most surprising rumoured set from the game-centric reports would be the first 18+ LEGO Minecraft set. While the theme has received massive models before, including 21137 The Mountain Cave for $249.99 and 21128 The Village for $199.99, 21265 is rumoured to cost just $89.99 by comparison.

That puts it at the same price as 76989 Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck, which similarly was the first 18+ set based on the Horizon franchise. It's fairly common for games or game companies to get a one-off 18+ set, including the recent 10323 PAC-MAN Arcade, but LEGO Minecraft has been an established range for over a decade.

These rumours have yet to be confirmed officially but so far, it's looking like an odd but interesting year for LEGO video game models, and that's not to mention the upcoming debut of LEGO Animal Crossing which will bring with it the first Nintendo minifigures too.
