Everyone is going to have a lot of fun with LEGO Icons 10327 Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter – but none more so than its designer did during the reveal.
While many film franchises have been replicated in LEGO sets before, there are a variety of ways that LEGO designers can go about this. Massive series like the MCU and Star Wars get playsets, display sets, enormous UCS builds, and so much more. Smaller but equally popular franchises like Jurassic World might gear their sets towards children, with smaller playsets that focus on the most exciting part: the dinosaurs.
You might have expected that a LEGO Icons set based on Dune would be a diorama set, making the most of the striking landscapes of Arrakis that give the film its name. However, LEGO designer Mike Psiaki went another direction, making a stunning build centred around the ship that can be summed up in only one word: swooshable.
The dragonfly-inspired design of the Ornithopter makes it unlike any other brick-built ship, complete with functional blades on the aircraft that can flap and retract with a 180-degree rotation. This means 10327 Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter is not only striking to look at, but it's also great fun to swoosh with. If you don't know what we mean, here's Mike with some swooshing action during recent the LEGO Fan Media Days.
Pictures don't do a set like 10327 Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter justice, so we hope that video gives some idea of how dynamic a set it is. LEGO Icons 10327 Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter is available to pre-order right now as of October 24, shipping and on sale widely February 1, retailing for £149.99 / $164.99 / €169.99.
