LEGO's experimentation across mid-sized sets looks set to continue in 2025

Despite ongoing interest in sprawling, pricey sets, the LEGO Group appears to be investing in mid-range models across various themes.

There's no denying that building and collecting LEGO can be an expensive hobby and many people's white whales are the enormous builds with triple figure price tags. However, the LEGO Group has quite intentionally invested in its mid-range sets over the last few years, translating popular larger models into smaller and more affordable alternatives.

That came after CEO Niels B. Christiansen stated earlier this year that despite seeing an increase in the number of sets sold in 2023, the company had also seen the average price of those sets go down. More recently in August, Christiansen went on to say that this trend had stabilised – but it doesn't seem like mid-range sets are going anywhere, judging from the latest rumours.

Just this week, a detailed rumoured description for LEGO Icons 10362 Parisian Café came via BrickTastic, a 2025 set believed to be part of a new ‘Restaurants of the World’ series, joining the also-rumoured ‘Gardens of the World’ which is said to bring 10359 Spanish Garden. While there's no rumoured piece count for the latter, 10362 Parisian Café is thought to have 1,101 pieces and both sets are expected to sell for less than £100.

When paired with other growing collections like the LEGO Star Wars midi-scale ships collection that has already blossomed in size in 2024, and the fact that the LEGO Icons theme – typically associated with large, detailed, and costly builds, is getting more and more affordable year on year, it seems that the LEGO Group isn't veering away from mid-range sets. In fact, with rumoured sets expanding on new collections of mid-sized sets, the company appears to be doubling down.

There are of course still some areas where there are no real affordable alternatives. As one example, the LEGO Group's rhythm for LEGO The Lord of the Rings sets appear to be reserved for massive and high-priced builds, although it's possible the 2025 set could break that cycle.

2025's rumoured 10362 Parisian Café and 10369 Spanish Garden are signs that the LEGO Group is keen to continue experimenting in the mid-range of LEGO sets. If those do well, translating the Modular Buildings collection into a more budget and space-friendly solution, perhaps other areas, like LEGO The Lord of the Rings, will also see mid-range alternatives appear sometime soon.
