A close collaboration between the LEGO Ideas design team and the set’s original creator was essential when it came to making 21363 The Goonies.
The LEGO Ideas theme officially revealed 21363 The Goonies this week, a 2,912-piece build that pays homage to the classic 1985 adventure film. The original concept for the model came from Vaggelis Ntezes (aka Delusion Brick), whose winning fan submission was chosen to become the physical set that will launch next month.
The creation of 21363 The Goonies represented a close collaboration between the LEGO Ideas design team and Vaggelis, one that pushed all involved to honour the original Richard Donner movie, as revealed in a new LEGO Ideas blog post.
“I thought that this was my dream project and desperately wanted to be involved,” said LEGO Ideas Graphic Designer Anthony Palamaro, a sentiment shared by his fellow team member.
“I was personally very excited to work with the first Greek LEGO Ideas fan designer,” added LEGO Ideas Model Designer Marina Stampoli, a Greek-native herself. “Vaggelis had the enthusiasm of a child throughout the process, which made our collaboration very fun. He provided feedback and pointed out his favourite bits of the set.”
The LEGO Ideas design team also batted potential concepts back and forth during the development of 21363 The Goonies, including which references and key moments to take from the original film.
“Marina and I discussed what functions would be fun to have,” Anthony explained, “what cool Easter eggs we could hide, and how best to tell the story of the movie. We collaborated to add storytelling to the build, including jokes and nods through graphics and how we could best include our favourite scenes.
“We also worked together with Warner Bros. to develop minifigures, sticker details and accuracy of the graphics to the clothing and props. It was incredibly fun to work with them!”
21363 The Goonies will be released for LEGO Insiders members first on November 1, alongside an exclusive GWP (while stocks last), followed by a wider launch for everyone else on November 4. The LEGO Ideas set will be priced at £269.99 in the UK, $329.99 in the US and €299.99 in Europe.
