The LEGO Ideas designers behind upcoming release 21347 Red London Telephone Box are keen to see what you can do with the latest set about to hit shelves.
21347 Red London Telephone Box is based on a very specific era and location of telephone box: the K2 that was designed largely for use in London, to be precise. However, just because the original design was focused on a specific box, that doesn't mean your build needs to stay focused on the same subject matter. In fact, the team behind the set, from the fan designer to those working at the LEGO Group, are excited to see what LEGO fans do with the set next, as they discussed in a recent roundtable discussing the set.
"I'm curious to see fans play with [21347 Red London Telephone Box] and adopt the phonebox as their own and turn it into something else," said Marina Stampoli. "I'm waiting to see more ideas come out of it, as it's such an iconic design. We have seen it in popular culture in street art, in album covers, so I'm really looking forward to seeing customised versions."
Indeed, there's even a history of customisation embedded in the real-life red telephone box, as is pointed out by the fan designer, John Cramp.
"The majority of the phone boxes that are left have actually been converted into other uses," he explained. "You get ones that are turned into miniature libraries or miniature coffee shops. There's even one near to me, probably the best one, that has been turned into a vintage toy museum with some old LEGO sets inside. I'm interested to see what MOCs people can come up with, altering the interior details. It's got a lot of scope for that sort of thing."
Taking John's last example would be a real meta creative project, turning 21347 Red London Telephone Box into a miniature brick-built museum of LEGO. You could easily take some inspiration from the exhibits on display in 10326 Natural History Museum – or get creative with your own. The interior of 21347 Red London Telephone Box has a lot of room to play with, as well as studs on the walls to attack the stickered plates that come with the sets, lending itself well to versatile customisation. Whatever strikes your fancy, the upcoming LEGO Ideas set is ready to play home to it.
If you're struggling for ideas, LEGO Ideas Design Manager Jordan Scott had some more ideas up his sleeve about how people could customise 21347 Red London Telephone Box.
"I'd actually like to see people continue the street, and use figures from 21334 Jazz Quartet to make a London street with a little coffee stand and build it out a lot," Jordan said. "Continue the fence, make a park – that'd be really fun to see that scale represented."
Jordan is here referring to the fact that the characters from 21334 Jazz Quartet are the perfect scale to match the size of 21347 Red London Telephone Box, making it easy to populate your brick-built corner of London. Whether you choose to use these people or simply build out an empty street of London remains up to you of course.
Some other London-focused sets that might be helpful 10258 London Bus, 21029 Buckingham Palace, 10253 Big Ben, 21045 Trafalgar Square, and 21034 London. All but the last one of those examples is now retired and none are at scale but with some careful arranging, you could manage to create a London-themed forced perspective. Your best bet, however, is likely to get creative with some bricks and simply continue building along your street without the aid of another set. After all, fans getting creative is what the LEGO Ideas theme is all about.
21347 Red London Telephone Box will be available to buy both online and in stores from February 1 for LEGO Insiders, with a wider launch on February 4, retailing at £99.99 / $114.99 / €114.99. You can find out more about the upcoming LEGO Ideas set by checking out our visual tour here.
