LEGO Ideas Family Tree designer reveals personal connections to the set

The fan designer behind 21346 Family Tree has revealed how he’s personally connected to the upcoming LEGO Ideas set.

LEGO Ideas recently revealed 21346 Family Tree, based on an original concept by fan designer Ivan Guerrero who won a 2022 contest that was hosted in partnership with Target. The 1,040-piece model launches on February 1, 2024, will be priced at £79.99 / $79.99 / €89.99 and can be pre-ordered now.

The core concept behind 21346 Family Tree is based around fans adding their own photographs and other items to the set, using 16 hanger pieces included with the build. Over time, the LEGO Ideas model should grow organically and also comes with multiple customisable elements such as a toy plane and kite, multiple bird boxes and birds, a butterfly, binoculars, roller skates, flower elements and a magnifying glass.

In a recent roundtable interview with Brick Fanatics and other fan media to discuss the set, Guerrero talked about the many multiple personal connections 21346 Family Tree has for him.

“There's one particular part of the set that I'm really excited about. There's a little butterfly piece (a new printed element) that's actually based on a butterfly from my home country, the Philippines.” Guerrero went on to say, “I’m not a huge bug person or anything, but it's a really cool Easter egg because it's based on a species that used to be featured on Filipino coins.”

Guerrero also stated how surprised he was when he found out his design had been selected as the winning entry in the LEGO Ideas x Target contest. “I couldn't believe it! First of all, mine wasn't the only family tree project that made it or that was submitted,” he told Brick Fanatics. “There were a couple of others and mine was just a little bit different from all of those. It felt really good because the family tree has been a personal project for me for many years.”

“Right behind me is a national family tree that I've been working on for many years now. It's a family tree mural we have at home. Every few years, I add a new portrait and new photographs to it, so to be able to share that with other people – that experience – it's just been unbelievable.”
