LEGO Ideas confirms new guidelines, including bigger piece counts and minifigure ratios

LEGO Ideas has published new guidelines for fan-designed projects, including confirmation of the increased maximum piece counts for designs.

Last week, it was reported that LEGO Ideas would be increasing the maximum piece count for projects 'soon' and now it seems that time is here. A new blog post from the LEGO Ideas team confirms that the maximum piece count has now increased from 3,000 to 5,000, with immediate effect.

That's not the only change, with a minimum 200-piece count now required for submissions to "push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness in each build." Last but not least, the LEGO Ideas team has also published guidance around a minifigure-to-element ratio. You can see the recommendations in the table below.

Element countSuggested minifigure count
200-4003
401-6004
601-8005
801-1,0006
1,001-1,5007
1,501-20008
2,001-2,5009
2,501-3,00010
3,001-3,50011
3,501-4,00012
4,001-4,50013
4,501-5,00014

The minifigure ratio isn't a requirement like the minimum and maximum piece counts, but rather a recommendation. LEGO Ideas notes that submissions outside of that ratio may be accepted as well.

"Each submission is evaluated within its own context, meaning if there is a compelling or narrative reason for including those minifigures approval would be at our discretion," reads the blog. "This is a guideline and is not designed to prevent builders from including all the minifigures needed to accurately recreate a scene or limit their imagination."

The new rules and guidelines take immediate effect and are not retroactively applied, so any submissions currently on the platform will not be affected. That means if you have a LEGO Ideas project that's already live under 200 pieces, it won't be removed.

What it does mean is that if you've had a design rejected in the past for being too large, you can now resubmit it with the new maximum piece count. However, you do need to manually resubmit, as it won't be done for you automatically.
