LEGO Ideas' official Gizmo set compared to the fan's pitch

LEGO Ideas 21361 Gizmo has been unveiled, expanding on the fan design with nearly triple the pieces, but making some major changes.

The 1,125-piece 21361 Gizmo is launching on October 1 for £89.99 / $109.99 / €99.99, based on the iconic '80s movie Gremlins, as well as fan designer terauma's challenge-winning model. Terauma's build may be based on the Mogwai, the same as the official set, but the two builds are far different in their sizes, piece count, techniques and their alternate forms.

Terauma's pitch is made up of around 400 pieces, while 21361 Gizmo uses 1,125. That's nearly triple the original's piece count, and you can tell that the official set is larger and more detailed thanks to this higher part total. The official set makes use of the new rounded one-stud domes for the tips of Gizmo's fingers and accentuates the mouth with sloped parts, as well. Terauma's build instead makes do with parts available at the time, and its smaller scale means it is more limited in the level of detail it can achieve.

The difference in the level of detail is especially evident when you compare the Gizmo's legs, with fur covering the length of his leg in the official set, while it cuts off just before the foot in the fan design. That's not to say that the official model is a complete improvement, though.

Despite the increased piece count, 21361 Gizmo lacks the Rambo style from Gremlins 2 that was pitched in the original submission. Instead, 21361 Gizmo's alternate mode is the ability to have the Mogwai sit down, moving his legs in the build accordingly and rebuilding a section of the body.

21361 Gizmo isn't without accessories similar to those in the pitched Rambo style, though, now including a pair of 3D glasses and a water splash. The two LEGO designs for Gizmo may be based on the same Mogwai, but the increased piece count has caused some major changes to the fan's submission, mostly upgrading the level of detail, but also eschewing a pitched alternate mode.

LEGO Ideas 21361 Gizmo will retail for £89.99 / $109.99 / €99.99, launching on October 1.
