LEGO Ideas project takes its lead from previous successful design

A new LEGO Ideas project to reach 10,000 supporters takes its lead from a previous successful design that joined the theme earlier this year.

LEGO Ideas fan designer eliot.obrien's Bolex 16mm Camera is an intricate recreation of an old-school Bolex camera, focusing on the most famous in the form of the H16, first released in 1935. As a a film industry professional and lover of cinema, the designer managed to recreate various inner workings of the real-life camera.

That includes the ability to operate the camera as if you're shooting your own film, front-mounted lenses that can be rotated, a side panel that can be removed in order to access the mechanism, a film strip that can be loaded into the camera around the sprockets, and various other interactive features. There's also a crank on the other side of the camera to engage the gear mechanism and let the film roll through the camera, as well as several working buttons and dials which are all accurate to the real camera.

The size and level of detail of the design is reminiscent of Marc a.k.a. Minibrick Productions' 21345 Polaroid OneStep SX-70 Camera, which similarly pays homage to a marvel of camera gear. With one focused on photography and the other on cinema, there's certainly room for both in the theme, if Bolex 16mm Camera can be successful in making it through the final review round of 2024.
