LEGO Ideas will return design rights earlier in new rule change

The LEGO Ideas team has announced changes to its rules and guidelines, including returning rights to fan designers earlier.

In a recent blog post, the LEGO Ideas team has outlined some changes to its rules and guidelines. First and foremost among them is the decision to return rights to Product Idea submissions immediately to the fan creator once they have either expired or been rejected.

Previously, LEGO Ideas held the rights to such submissions for a period of time afterwards or, in the case of Challenge submissions, held the rights indefinitely. The change will apply to any and all Ideas submitted on or after December 16, but not retroactively to any submitted before then.

The second change gives the LEGO Ideas team more options on how to respond to fraudulent behaviour on the platform, although LEGO Ideas acknowledged that it's a small minority who do so. In the terms and conditions, it's stated that LEGO Ideas can remove content, edit content (like removing specific images or sections of text), suspend users, or permanently block users found to be engaging in fraudulent behaviour.

Last but not least, LEGO Ideas has also updated its Rules and Guidelines with a mixture of new and refined rules, including:

  • Clarity around accepting modified elements, meaning cutting, glueing, or other modifications are not allowed
  • The LEGO Group logo cannot be the main focus of a build
  • Mock-up product boxes or other marketing materials as part of a submission are not allowed
  • Creations that are focused on mascots, flags, or brand logos are not allowed
