LEGO The Lord of the Rings challenge Grand Prize Winner revealed

The LEGO The Lord of the Rings challenge winner and runners-up have been revealed by the Ideas team after a fan vote.

The LEGO Ideas team challenged builders to design a birthday party as if organised by the hobbits, in honour of Bilbo Baggins' birthday (say that five times fast) on September 22. On that very date, the team announced the winner of the challenge following a fan vote: Birthday With Old Friends by Brickcar13.

The winning designer has won themselves signed copies of 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell, 10354 The Lord of the Rings: The Shire, and 10367 The Lord of the Rings: Balrog Book Nook. The build captures the moment of fireworks exploding, with a backdrop to arrange the different magical sights. The model manages to capture even as far as away as Mordor, with a miniature version of the Eye of Sauron atop Barad-dûr visible amongst the celebrations.

The LEGO Ideas team also recognised two runners-up: Bilbo’s 111th Birthday Party Extravaganza by Yayael and The Grey Wizard’s Grand Birthday Display by JinyuDesign. Both feature vibrant landscapes from the Shire, complete with fireworks overhead and various hobbit-approved food and drink options.

While those builds won't be made into real LEGO sets, if this has got you in the mood for building something from Middle-earth, you can earn double Insiders points on 10316 The Lord of the Rings: The Shire in the UK and Europe, or pick up 40761 The Lord of the Rings: Sméagol & Déagol for free in the US until September 24.
