LEGO Minecraft is set to branch out into several new areas in 2025, but where else could the blocky LEGO theme go?
LEGO Minecraft already sought to appeal to a new, older audience in 2024 with the 18+ display-focused set 21265 The Crafting Table and that expansion looks likely to continue in 2025 and beyond. While the theme has historically focused on straightforward playsets, typically but not exclusively geared towards a younger audience, that appears to be ready to change.
Already, we've had rumours of Minecraft taking over the vacant licensed advent calendar spot left by LEGO Marvel, as well as confirmation of the first-ever LEGO Minecraft visual dictionary. On top of that, the latest rumours suggest we'll be getting Minecraft LEGO sets based on the live-action movie that could mean major changes are in store for the theme's classic minifigures.
With those new products seeming to indicate that Minecraft is getting more attention and resources from the LEGO Group, where else could the theme go in the coming years?
More 18+ display sets

It would make a lot of sense for Minecraft to age up slightly. The first iteration of the game came out in 2009, so those who played it first as young kids are now adults with adult money that they're ready to spend on LEGO sets that remind them of their childhood. It's the same thinking that likely led to the teased LEGO Game Boy and why LEGO Star Wars has begun to revisit more and more Clone Wars sets.
LEGO Minecraft kicked off these efforts with 21265 The Crafting Table but there are quite literally hundreds more blocks from the game that could also suit. If you have a crafting table, the next logical step would be a furnace, or perhaps digging into dirt, stone, or wood blocks. Having smaller ones that you can combine to stack and build things would be an extra fun step, or perhaps a Netherrack block that breaks down like 21265 The Crafting Table to reveal the different biomes from the Nether.
The LEGO Group has brought out buildable characters for a lot of themes, from Star Wars and Marvel to 40649 Up-Scaled LEGO Minifigure. The mobs and characters from Minecraft could also very easily lend themselves to such builds, being made from blocks already.
Truthfully, there are a lot of places that LEGO Minecraft could go if it tried to balance playsets with more display sets and that would likely age up the audience, pulling in a wider variety of builders.
Movie magic

With the live-action movie coming out later this year, there will be a lot more possibilities for scenes and locations to be recreated in LEGO sets. Minecraft as a game is open-world and creative, so it's hard to replicate recognisable locations outside of some core structures.
However, the Minecraft movie will visit a lot of places and offer some concrete inspiration for LEGO sets. When people can see something they recognise and like in a set, they could be more likely to pick it up, rather than the more general sets like 21270 The Mooshroom House that aren't based on anything most players will have seen.
Could Minecraft be the new MCU?

It's no secret that the Marvel movies and TV shows have not been as popular since the end of the Infinity Saga and that could have translated through to less interest in LEGO Marvel as a theme (although that's just speculation). Could the renewed diversification of Minecraft be an attempt to plug that gap?
The rumours suggest that the advent calendar is switching from Marvel to Minecraft, at the very least, so that's one indication of that theory proving true. LEGO Marvel and Minecraft have some shared similarities in that they can appeal to both adults and kids, offer both display and play sets, and have ready and thriving audiences ready to tap.
Certainly, the potential is there for LEGO Minecraft to become a more varied and diverse theme – and the rumours we've spotted so far lay some groundwork for exciting possibilities.
