World's largest LEGO minifigure collection outgrows its home

One LEGO super-fan’s world record-breaking minifigure collection is now so large, he can no longer fit them all in his own house.

You may think you have quite a few LEGO minifigures in your collection, but LEGO super-fan Steven van Dyk probably has you beaten with a whopping 11,803 characters to date. That bests the previous record by over 2,000, but it’s a huge number that’s beginning to cause some issues.

“The collection has become so big that I cannot display it at my house anymore,” Steven explained in a Guinness World Records interview, “so I rotate parts of it on display.”

The Belgian collector began picking up LEGO minifigures when he was just eight years-old, in the shape of a classic Pirates character with an eye patch and red and black striped torso being his initial addition.

“It was one of the first that started my love for LEGO,” said Steven. “Recently, my mother found it while cleaning the house and gave it back to me. It’s great to have this piece from my childhood back in my collection.”

Steven’s massive LEGO minifigure collection includes everything from Star Wars and Batman to TMNT and Winnie the Pooh, with some very hard-to-find characters also having been obtained over the years.

“Some of my favourites include the rare and limited edition minifigures that are hard to find,” Steven stated, referring to the Lester promo minifigure from the Leicester Square LEGO Store opening. “This one is quite rare and was initially only available through a raffle. I waited in line for six hours to enter the new LEGO store in London and I was lucky enough to win one of the 250 available.”

However, while Steven's collection holds the official Guinness World Record, it doesn't mean there aren't bigger collections out there. The original interview later cites a solid gold Boba Fett as 'the most valuable LEGO minifigure' at $11,495, for example – despite LEGO collector Samuel Burkhardt recently spending $40,000 on a one-in-20 Peter Jackson minifigure. Let us know in the comments if you can beat Steven's record...
