Every LEGO Super Mario fan had the same thought when 71045 Series 25 launched – and someone has finally put the bricks together.
Anyone who looked at Mushroom Sprite in 71045 Series 25 will likely have had the same thought: that's the perfect piece to finally create a LEGO Super Mario minifigure. Although the LEGO Group has officially designed a number of Super Mario characters for the LEGO Super Mario theme, they've all been buildable characters that are compatible with the interactive playsets, rather than unique minifigure designs.
However, we now have the perfect minifigure accessory to create at least one of the characters ourselves. Mushroom Sprite includes a mushroom hairpiece, turning the head into a smiling mushroom – just like Toad. It's even coloured in red and white (although the colours are inverted from how Toad usually appears in the Super Mario franchise).
One person has gone one step further from just imagining and has created a custom Toad minifigure using the Mushroom Sprite head, complete with his classic blue waistcoat torso and dark legs, sharing the results on reddit. Traditionally, Toad would likely have white legs but the build certainly shows what's now possible with the mushroom head element.
If you're keen to get to work on your own custom Toad minifigure, then you'll need to pick up a Mushroom Sprite from 71405 Series 25. The switch to blind cardboard boxes has made finding specific minifigures more difficult – but not impossible. Brick Search recently added a Series 25 minifigures scanner, making use of the larger data matrix code on the bottom of Series 25 boxes and the app’s pre-existing barcode scanner.
Once you’ve got the app downloaded and installed, tap the blue button at the bottom of the screen to open the scanner, then aim it at the data matrix code. Once scanned, you’ll see which minifigure is inside the box in just a few seconds. You can find a full tutorial on this effective new method here.
