LEGO Monkie Kid 2025 sets stay true to their mythological roots

Two new LEGO Monkie Kid sets launching in early 2025 continue the theme's approach of taking inspiration from classic Chinese mythology.

The LEGO Group pulled back the curtain this week on two new LEGO Monkie Kid sets that will kick off the new year on January 1, 2025. Both 80065 Erlang’s Celestial Mech and 80066 Mythical Creature Qilin expand the theme once again, with the colourful models each including a unique selection of minifigures and plenty of play potential.

Those looking to add the new LEGO Monkie Kid sets to their collections will no doubt be pleased to discover then that 80065 Erlang’s Celestial Mech and 80066 Mythical Creature Qilin continue to stay true to the theme’s reimagining of classic Chinese mythological tales.

For starters, the 806-piece 80065 Erlang’s Celestial Mech is based on the legend of the three-eyed Chinese warrior god and comes with a golden spear, Celestial Dog figure, a hoverbike and five minifigures. According to lore, Erlang (or Erlang Shen) is associated with water control, justice, warriorhood and hunting, while his canine companion is known as Xiaotian Quan.

In Ming-era semi-mythical novels, Erlang is depicted as an enemy-turned-ally of the Monkey King and the greatest warrior god of heaven. That strength and power certainly seems to have translated well into the upcoming 80065 Erlang’s Celestial Mech, with the 43cm tall build boasting numerous gold-lacquered pieces and what may be multiple printed parts.

80066 Mythical Creature Qilin also delves deep into Chinese folklore, with the 791-piece beast based on a horned chimera. The description for the set states that the model is a poseable dragon-horse animal, although modern retellings of ancient myths often conceptualise it as more of a unicorn.

However, 80066 Mythical Creature Qilin appears to offer up a more fiery take on a dragon-like creature, with a combination of gold-lacquered, red and orange pieces, plus a handful of blue parts around its neck. The fully-articulated LEGO Monkie Kid model also comes with a flying cloud, food cart and five minifigures.

80065 Erlang’s Celestial Mech and 80066 Mythical Creature Qilin will both be released on January 1, 2025. Full confirmed details for the upcoming LEGO Monkie Kid sets can be found in the table below.
