The LEGO Movie directors have suggested that it could be part of a wider cinematic universe with another iconic toy film.
Speaking to Digital Spy, The LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller responded to a widespread theory that Will Ferrell playing a corporate CEO set on keeping toys in their line in not just The LEGO Movie, but also Barbie could suggest that the two movies exist within the same fictional universe.
"Absolutely 100% true," joked Lord. "We imagined it and designed it from the beginning."
"We knew one day Greta would pick up the mantle and run with it," Miller added. "But yeah, I really subscribed to that theory."
In The LEGO Movie, we see Ferrell's character at home, using glue to freeze his LEGO builds in place and stopping his son from getting creative with the models. However, we never have it confirmed exactly where he works, only that he wears a suit and has some sort of high-powered corporate gig.
There's no way of knowing for sure, then, that he doesn't work at Mattel, heading to work and going on to appear in Barbie, where Ferrell plays Mattel's CEO who's seeking to quite literally put Barbie back in her box. Indeed, while Lord and Miller were clearly joking, it does make a lot of sense. The characters align so far as they are both keen to stick with the status quo.
We'll be watching both movies imagining that we're getting separate glimpses into Ferrell's character's home and work lives. If it's good enough for Lord and Miller, it's good enough for us.
