LEGO Neuschwanstein Castle explores legacy of the real castle's royal designer

LEGO Architecture 21063 Neuschwanstein Castle captures the German palace as it stands today – but its history is just as fascinating.

Over 1.3 million people visit Neuschwanstein Castle every year, a fact that its original royal designer and benefactor would hate. The personality and legacy of King Ludwig II of Bavaria are woven into the very bricks of Neuschwanstein, and some of that even carries over into the 3,455-piece LEGO Architecture set.

There are the physical signs of his legacy: the swan and lion imagery, and the exacting detail that renders the architectural twists and turns. However, the build experience is also emblematic of how Ludwig went about building his life's work – one that he wouldn't live to see completed.

To explain what we're talking about, we first need to dive into the weird and wonderful life of King Ludwig, and the history of the castle itself.
