LEGO NINJAGO and Fortnite are going to head to head

LEGO NINJAGO and Fortnite will unexpectedly be going head-to-head later this year in a comparable pair of mech models.

LEGO NINJAGO has always and will continue to be the go-to theme for LEGO mechs. They are a core part of the original LEGO theme and have a permanent place in NINJAGO's story. Last year, the biggest mech in the theme, and almost the entire portfolio so far, was released in the form of 71821 Cole's Titan Dragon Mech.

It's beaten in size by the retired 21311 Voltron, which in turn is about to be beaten in size by the colossal 77078 Mecha Team Leader. LEGO Fortnite's biggest set so far is available to pre-order now, and there are a few interesting comparisons to be drawn between it and the sizable NINJAGO mech.

Not only do the two have similar heights (including the decorative wings on 71821 Cole's Titan Dragon Mech), but they both include only one minifigure and are intended for an older audience. Despite the similar overall sizes, there's no doubt that 77078 Mecha Team Leader has a denser build with more than double the number of pieces than that of 71821 Cole's Titan Dragon Mech.

It speaks only to how well 71821 Cole's Titan Dragon Mech uses its fewer parts, and the NINJAGO mech is also much more posable than 77078 Mecha Team Leader. The Fortnite mech can only be posed at the hips, hands, feet, shoulders, arms and head. The NINJAGO model has all that and some rare knee joints.

This is despite 77078 Mecha Team Leader making use of the new XL joint pieces, which allow for bigger builds to be posed without buckling under their own weight. The pieces did not exist when 71821 Cole's Titan Dragon Mech was designed.

With so many comparisons to be drawn between the two mechs despite their many differences, they'll both be available on shelves together for mech fans to enjoy, but only for a matter of months. At the time of writing, 77078 Mecha Team Leader will be released on August 1, and 71821 Cole's Titan Dragon Mech is retiring at the end of the year.

That still leaves mech enthusiasts with five full months to enjoy the duo of 45cm-tall mech models. 71821 Cole's Titan Dragon Mech is available now and 77078 Mecha Team Leader can be pre-ordered now, but is not out until August 1.
