LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog Insiders set's availability lets it down

Reviews for the new LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog Insiders reward posit that it's another great build that is let down by its method of acquisition.

The LEGO Insiders Rewards Centre recently expanded with another full-sized set available exclusively for members to pick up with their hard-earned points. 40781 Badnik: Crabmeat has 181 pieces and can be yours now for 2,000 points, or the equivalent of spending £250 / $250 / €250 to earn such an amount alongside purchased LEGO sets.

2,000 LEGO Insiders points are worth around £12.50 if you were going to redeem them towards a discount on a future purchase. For more details, head to our dedicated LEGO Insiders page. It's the method of acquisition – which will require yet another purchase to add 40781 Badnik: Crabmeat to an existing basket – that reportedly lets an otherwise amazing model. That's according to new reviews of the Sonic the Hedgehog model, which sits in a strange but welcome spot in the theme too.

"I really don't have many complaints about this because it is just a cute set and as a Sonic fan, I might be biased," states cjBricklz. "However, I do not think spending 2,000 points is worth it on something like this. Specifically, you can probably buy this for $10 to $30 down the road through people selling it."

"Even a gift-with-purchase would have made more sense for this because it's so small compared to anything and as a small set in a Sonic the Hedgehog wave, it would have done better."

Agreeing with the earlier review, just2good chimed in earlier today, saying; "I love this set as a build, it's more interesting than some of the LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog builds that are at retail. It's so frustrating that this is something that most people can't get their hands on."

While the value of this model compared to a redeemed discount is favourable for the 181 pieces, the need to spend £250 / $250 / €250 to earn the necessary points throws off both reviewers, who both mention that the model is otherwise fantastic for Sonic the Hedgehog fans.

The instructions for 40781 Badnik: Crabmeat are available online, should you wish to source the parts yourself but note that the included Tocky figure only appears in three LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets.

Unfortunately, all but two of the necessary elements to build 40781 Badnik: Crabmeat are available on Pick a Brick at the time of writing. Hopefully, those last couple of pieces land on the service soon for another method of acquiring the set, without the box.
