Relive the Battle of Hoth with 75429 AT-AT Driver Helmet, a unique and welcome new addition to the dormant LEGO Star Wars Helmet Collection.
While many of us assumed the LEGO Star Wars Helmet Collection was done and dusted, that is apparently not the case at all. The recent reveal of 75429 AT-AT Driver Helmet resurrects this series with what is currently a standalone release (though two more sets are rumoured to follow later in 2025), based on a minor character from The Empire Strikes Back that has mere seconds of screen time, appearing in only a handful of scenes.
The LEGO Star Wars design team’s selection of the AT-AT Driver's headgear may therefore seem a bit of a head-scratcher at first glance, but it results in one of the most unique brick-built helmets to date.

Helmet history

Quick Star Wars history lesson: during the production of A New Hope, the Lucasfilm production and props departments combined a Rebel X-wing pilot helmet with the face mask of an Imperial Stormtrooper to create the striking black headgear worn by TIE Fighter pilots.
Two of those exact same helmets were then repurposed for The Empire Strikes Back, sprayed grey and slightly upgraded with a number of greeblies, a word coined by George Lucas to describe spare parts harvested from model kits and real-world found items.
That same look has been carefully translated into a brick-built version, with 75429 AT-AT Driver Helmet proving to be an intricately detailed and complex 18+ display model. It’s worth noting at this stage that the AT-AT Driver (or pilot) helmets were thought for many years to be white, a misconception that was also reflected in early LEGO Star Wars minifigures of the character.
The Empire’s Helmet Collection strikes back

The good news when it comes to 75429 AT-AT Driver Helmet is that the LEGO Star Wars team has attempted to ensure that this build is as accurate to the original source material as possible. Primarily consisting of grey and black elements, the model takes some inspiration from a few sections of previous releases in the series, such as 75276 Stormtrooper Helmet and 75274 TIE Fighter Pilot Helmet.
However, 75429 AT-AT Driver Helmet isn’t merely a colour-swapped version of the latter. Instead, the set improves and enhances the 2020 design, adding a more distinctive raised ‘mohawk’ section on top, more detailed side areas, a revised look for the side vents and splashes of red to make the completed model pop when displayed.
The result is a distinctive and eye-catching set, one that offers up a truly authentic portrayal of the Imperial headgear. From the grey air canisters at the rear of the LEGO Star Wars build and the slight hint of red poking through the front nose grill to the contours of the black eye lenses and placement of certain greeblies, 75429 AT-AT Driver Helmet can’t help but impress.
AT-Attention to detail
75429 AT-AT Driver Helmet isn’t without a few niggles though. For starters, there’s a small selection of extremely fiddly stickers to be applied, some of which will have you reaching for the swear jar more than once.
Then there’s the exposed look of two of the greeblie sections at the front of the helmet, a slightly unfinished feel that can easily be fixed with a couple of black 3x2 tiles (see images above), something that the LEGO Star Wars design team really could have included with the set. The studs are presumably intended to represent the slight texture on the actual helmet, but they end up standing out a little too much.
In addition, 75429 AT-AT Driver Helmet is missing the air tubes featured on 75274 TIE Fighter Pilot Helmet and the front life-support pack from the real-world prop. While adding both to the build would have made the model look more like a LEGO Star Wars bust, their omission doesn’t feel like too much of a loss.
All in all though, 75429 AT-AT Driver Helmet is a definite win for the LEGO Star Wars Helmet Collection, and one that fits in well with previous releases from the subtheme. We’re just keeping our fingers crossed that the build is the first in a much-needed resurgence of such sets and that similar releases really are on the cards for 2025...
Our honest opinion: 75429 AT-AT Driver Helmet is a detailed, complex and satisfying recreation of a unique and distinctive piece of Imperial headgear.
