LEGO breaks ground on world's largest library of LEGO bricks

The LEGO Group has started work on its new Innovation Campus in Billund, soon to be home to the biggest LEGO brick collection ever.

The LEGO Group, headed up by CEO Niels B Christiansen and Chief Product and Marketing Officer Julia Goldin, broke ground on a new 50,000 sqm Innovation Campus in the LEGO Group global headquarters in Billund on October 30. The plans for the new space include offering space for 1,700 LEGO employees to work across product marketing and development, gaming, product and quality teams, including 600 designers.

The building will also be home to the world's biggest collection of LEGO elements, with plans to build up a collection of more than 20,000 different types of LEGO bricks, plates, and more in 70 different colours. The Innovation Campus is an expansion of the LEGO Group's existing headquarters in Billund, the home of the brick.

"I am thrilled to mark the beginning of construction of another new campus as we continue to invest in attractive workplaces for our colleagues around the world," said Niels B Christiansen. "Not only is the building design creative at its core – it is also true to our sustainability ambitions, including our commitment to reducing carbon emissions."

Sustainability was a key focus of the design, featuring a wooden structure that helps to reduce upfront emissions, as well as various factors of building geometry, building heights, or façade design. being made to improve energy efficiency, biodiversity, and water conservation.

As you'd expect from the LEGO Group, LEGO bricks also played a key role in designing the building. LEGO miniatures were often used to capture and evolve ideas during the design process, resulting in a building made up of six overlapping modules covering four floors.

The campus naturally includes various play zones, as well as the PlayWay that connects different neighbourhoods and departments. Daylight and green spaces are used to create a natural feel, in line with the wooden materials.

"Innovation Campus will be an inspiring workplace that honours the modular design of LEGO bricks," said Julia Goldin. "With colleague input playing a key role in shaping the overall design, the campus will foster creativity, inclusivity, and the free flow of ideas.

"We have a truly global and diverse team, and this new building has been designed to represent the fun and innovation embodied by the LEGO brand. The space will serve as a global centre for product and design excellence, enabling opportunities to explore new dimensions of creativity, including digital experiences and interactive design, ensuring we continue to innovate every aspect of the LEGO experience."
