LEGO Super Mario now has almost all the Koopalings – but not quite

The reveal of LEGO Super Mario 71427 Larry’s and Morton’s Airships Expansion Set means the Koopalings are almost complete.

As the name of the recently-revealed set suggests, LEGO Super Mario 71427 Larry’s and Morton’s Airships Expansion Set introduces Morton, another one of the Koopalings. Also known as Bowser's Minions, this group of seven recurring enemies in the Super Mario franchise are a clan of dastardly siblings who act as leaders of the Koopa Troop under Bowser. Often seen alongside Bowser Jr., the gang includes Larry, Wendy, Iggy, Lemmy, Ludwig, Morton, and Roy.

We now have six of the seven replicated as buildable LEGO Super Mario figures, with Ludwig appearing in 71408, Iggy in 71412, Wendy in 71418, Lemmy in 71403, and (of course most recently) Larry and Morton in 71427. That only leaves Roy Koopa, a tough and brawny member of the group, distinguished by his pink and purple shell and bright pink sunglasses (reflecting his original inspiration of rockstar Roy Orbison).

We're not the only one who's noticed the absence of Roy, with other Super Mario fans taking to social media to call for his appearance. There's one more LEGO Super Mario set rumoured to be on its way in 2023, known only as a mysterious set number of 71426, so we can only hope that Roy will be able to make an appearance there, ahead of the theme's retirement in its entirety before the summer of 2024.
