The LEGO Group has used artificial intelligence to optimise its packaging, reducing the number of bags and the size of boxes.
Although the LEGO Group has caught some criticism in the past for using AI and, while there are still legitimate concerns around the use of generative AI especially in creative industries, this is one area where AI can clearly be of use. Ultimately, more and more companies will be using AI to streamline processes where they can, just as the LEGO Group has done now.
Speaking at TechEX Europe in Amsterdam, as reported by Mobile World Live, the LEGO Group's VP of Operations Jesper Toubol outlined a number of ways that digital technology has been incorporated into the company's processes. That includes using AI to optimise packaging.
Specifically, Toubol went on to note that the LEGO Group had been able to cut the number of inner bags used and reduce the box size of some sets, which benefited the company both financially and environmentally. It's worth noting that AI has its own environmental concerns, but it's been a long-term goal of the LEGO Group to improve the sustainability of its packaging.
Fewer bags and smaller boxes mean less material overall, whether paper or plastic. That helps to both reduce the amount of waste produced per LEGO set, but also reduces the carbon emissions of transporting a smaller parcel.
Behind-the-scenes uses of AI like this are becoming more commonplace in 2025, but the LEGO Group was using AI for non-creative purposes as far back as in 2023, when it incorporated the technology into its safety guidelines.
