The making of LEGO Voyagers reveals surprisingly sad inspiration

The LEGO Voyagers team has offered a peek behind the scenes, revealing a surprisingly bittersweet inspiration behind the upcoming game.

Video game publisher Annapurna Interactive has shared a peek behind the scenes of LEGO Voyagers as part of a developer spotlight on Light Brick Studios, the creators of the game. The two-player co-op releases on September 15 and follows two 1x1 bricks who dream of exploring space.

It's a follow-up to LEGO Builder's Journey and embodies the same calming, level-based gameplay, accompanied by soft, atmospheric graphics and music. When it comes to the soundtrack, composer Henrik Lindstrand revealed a surprisingly bittersweet inspiration for the in-game music.

"I remember when Carsten came to my studio at some point and he talked about this idea," Henrik explained. "He said: 'Henrik, do you remember from your childhood when you had a best friend and you shared a dream and you were so close with one another, and then maybe after summer vacation or something, you realised that you were slowly drifting apart from each other.

"That sparked many of the initial ideas of the soundtrack. The idea of having two main characters that are so minimalistic, being only 1x1 bricks, was a really bold choice, but it also gave me, as a composer, a big responsibility to put some emotions in those characters."

While the music shown so far in the trailer and gameplay teasers isn't overwhelmingly sad, there's a melancholy to it. It's hard to say how much this will feed into the game's narrative. If Voyagers is anything like Builder's Journey, there will be a story to uncover, but it's not central to the experience of the game, conveyed more through non-verbal behaviour and environmental cues.

With the release of LEGO Voyagers just a few days away, you can pre-save it on Steam now. It will be available to play on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2. Check out the full behind-the-scenes video by clicking the embedded video below.
