New LEGO Super Mario pieces should be useful elsewhere

There's a pair of extremely specific pieces in the new LEGO Super Mario 72037 Mario & Standard Kart, but using them elsewhere isn't impossible.

When 72037 Mario & Standard Kart launches in May, the new Mario moustache and nose elements will debut as some of the most exclusive pieces ever released, seemingly designed specifically for the unique visage of the iconic character.

Despite their unique and specialised shapes to best fit Mario's modern proportions, we've thought of a few other places for the designers to use these elements, with a bit of effort to make them fit into sets.

The piece seems to work particularly well as a hedge and other greenery, though the pointed tips might be hard to work around without overlapping with exposed studs. Seen below in a concept as additions to the flowerbed at the front of 21353 The Botanical Garden, the moustache element in shades of green works well on trees and all manner of plants in theory.

It wouldn't be surprising to see it resurface as part of the LEGO Botanicals range in the year to come, as many other unique elements have.

Otherwise, the moustache piece is ideal for all kinds of fluffy objects, including wool on the 40380 Easter Sheep BrickHeadz. Stacking these modified plates on top of one another would be ideal for larger brick-built sheep figures, though precisely where a bigger LEGO sheep might appear is unknown.

Alternatively, the same concept can be applied to clouds with the moustache element stacked dozens of times to replace the material pieces in 80039 The Heavenly Realms.

The same logic can be applied to other LEGO sets with clouds, though, including several other Super Mario sets that use the current modified cloud plate. Whether as smoke, steam or clouds, the moustache may prove to be more versatile than expected.

The nose's potential is less clear. The LEGO Architecture team may be the first to find a place for it after they made use of a flesh-coloured half-dome piece in 21062 Trevi Fountain. Images suggest that the new nose piece goes over its foundation's boundaries, though, which would make it even harder to use in buildings.

Otherwise, the shape of the new LEGO nose lends itself well to exaggerated eyes on animated characters and plants. A possible place to feature them in the future is as Yoshi's protruding eyes, but they wouldn't be the perfect shape, which may not be enough for Nintendo after such specifically-shaped pieces have been debuted in 72037 Mario & Standard Kart

72037 Mario & Standard Kart will be available from May 15, 2025, priced at €169.99 / £139.99 / $169.99. You can take a closer look at the biggest Mario Kart model yet by clicking here.
