LEGO 21342 The Insect Collection's faithfulness to reality is both a positive and a negative, depending on where you stand.
There's no denying that all three of the main builds in LEGO 21342 The Insect Collection are accurate portrayals of their real-life counterparts. If you're still unconvinced, just look at the comparison images that the LEGO Group provided below.
From the vibrant colours to the creative use of elements like revolvers to create faithful details, each one of the brick-built creatures looks impressively real, at least from the early photos. However, this is working both for and against them – depending on people's opinions on bugs. Many people are awed by the colourful models, taking to Twitter to share the praise.
Over on Reddit, people were similarly impressed, with one user writing that it matches up well with their professional backgrounds: "I love it, it'll be amazing on top of my entomology cabinet."
However, on the same post, a group of people emerged who are less keen on the set: entomophobic people, or those who are scared of insects.
"I really don't like most insects so [definitely] not for me," wrote one person, while another added: "My son got stung by his first hornet today. I'm pretty sure he won't like this set."
After all, bugs aren't for everyone, so it's understandable that some people don't want to display brick-built insects in their homes. However, the eclectic use of elements, such as the vibrant orange wings on the Hercules Beetle and the delicate plated patterns on the Blue Morpho Butterfly, makes these insects real works of art, rather than reflections of creepy-crawlies from around the world. Plus, at least these ones can't move, bite, or sting – and they look a lot more appealing than the majority of common insects that you might find under a log.
