While the three full-sized bugs in LEGO Ideas 21342 The Insect Collection look good, some builders are mourning what could have been.
The newly-revealed 21342 The Insect Collection has confirmed that just three of the original five brick-built insects have made it into the final build. While that arguably just leaves more room for detail and quality on the Blue Morpho Butterfly, Hercules Beetle and Chinese Mantis, some fans of the original design are outraged at what has become of the ladybug and bee.
The unlucky duo are not entirely gone, however. It's worth noting that both are still included in the set, with a brick-built honeybee spotted just below the Blue Morpho Butterfly, sharing its flowery habitat. Things aren't looking quite as rosy for the ladybug, represented merely as a couple of studs – and they're in prime position to be eaten by one of their predators, the Chinese Mantis.
Presumably, it was down to the scale of these smaller insects that meant they weren't ultimately included as buildable versions. Plus, the final designs of the main three insects have had more detail and colour added to them when compared to Spanish builder José María's original design. If relegating the honeybee and the ladybug to supporting roles meant. that the main trio could shine, then we think it's a compromise worth making.
However, not everyone is of the same opinion, with many taking to Twitter, Instagram and Reddit to express their displeasure.
"That poor ladybug…" commented one Instagram user, avoidberg, on the LEGO Group's post announcing the set.
Still, there are plenty of other positive reactions to LEGO Ideas 21342 The Insect Collection, so we're hoping that the majority of people, like us, see the reveal as a glow-up, rather than a sizing-down.
21342 The Insect Collection launches on September 4 for LEGO Insiders and September 7 for everyone else, for £69.99 / $79.99 / €79.99.
