Rumoured LEGO Speed Champions piece counts don't inspire hope among Formula 1 fans

After more rumoured details about LEGO Speed Champions Formula 1 sets surfaced, fans' hopes for a varied wave appear to be dashed.

LEGO Speed Champions is rumoured to welcome ten Formula 1-themed builds in March of next year as part of the new LEGO x Formula 1 collection and to kick off a new season of motorsports. With more rumoured details reported by Brick Clicker (via BrickTastic), the piece counts between the ten builds ranges by roughly 30 pieces. That suggests that the cars will be roughly the same, coming in at roughly the same size as 76919 2023 McLaren Formula 1 Race Car.

That has dashed the hopes of some fans – and our own speculation – that a ten-car Speed Champions wave would perhaps revisit classic cars or introduce diversity some other way. Instead, LEGO Speed Champions collectors are inferring that the wave will feature all ten cars from 2024, given that the long run time in designing a LEGO set would make basing the sets off 2025 liveries and models tricky.

Considering that most of the differences in modern Formula 1 cars lie underneath the bodywork and in the liveries, that would disappoint some builders. Some argue that the wave will be essentially ten almost-identical cars with different stickers to demonstrate the teams.

"All the builds will be identical, just different colours and stickers," wrote Jifeeb on reddit. "Meh. And I’m a huge F1 fan."

"Ten cars, all the same build, except one or two minor differences in brick or plate size, just different colours and stickers," added mewikime on another post. "They had 70 years of car designs to choose from. They could've done one from each decade and then three additional ones, or something."

Of course, it remains to be seen whether the LEGO designers have managed to introduce unique features between the cars, despite the real-life similarities. There might be a narrow piece count window but until we see the LEGO Speed Champions sets or indeed get confirmation that they're even on the way at all, we won't know if people's fears about a bland ten-car wave are founded.
