Rumoured LEGO City tower might not be what you expect

A new LEGO City direct-to-consumer model is rumoured, but you might want to set your expectations away from the likes of 76178 Daily Bugle.

According to a new rumour, to be taken with caution, 60473 The City Tower is said to be coming in June and while further details are scarce, it is reported to be a direct-to-consumer model, meaning it would only be available from the LEGO Group directly rather than at other retailers.

Direct-to-consumer models tend to be on the bigger side, especially in recent years and so far, LEGO City's biggest set has been 60380 Downtown with 2,010 elements. Based on direct-to-consumer sets in the past few years, the rumoured model could have anywhere between 2,000 and 5,000 pieces, likely overtaking 60380 Downtown as the biggest LEGO City set ever.

That's only speculation on our part, but more likely for the rumoured LEGO City set is that it won't be like 76178 Daily Bugle, despite the name and theme suggesting a skyscraper creation. 76178 Daily Bugle is a modular-compatible model that is fully enclosed and it is a suitable skyscraper for any city display.

LEGO City's buildings have always been open at the back for a play-focused experience. Instead of expecting a modular-compatible skyscraper from this new LEGO rumour, it would be wise to look towards LEGO City and Friends instead.

LEGO Friends' largest sets depict towering creations that would fit nicely into a street scene but with an open back for play value. This open rear doesn't detract from their level of detail though, especially when it comes to 42670 Heartlake City Apartments and Stores.

The rumoured 60473 The City Tower is more likely to follow LEGO Friends and City rather than the likes of the modular buildings, no matter how big it might be and even should it be a direct-to-consumer creation. Keeping your expectations in check and taking the rumour with a pinch of salt, LEGO City's second direct-to-consumer model and possibly its biggest build yet might just be hitting shelves this summer.
