Rumoured LEGO How to Train Your Dragon set plays it safe

The rumoured LEGO How to Train Your Dragon set's reported model is playing it safe, no matter what part of the franchise it's based on.

Rumour of a LEGO How to Train Your Dragon set, depicting just Toothless as a buildable figure, surfaced earlier this month from a reliable source (though it's still to be taken with plenty of caution). Given that a live-action How To Train Your Dragon movie is coming on June 13, 2025, exactly what the rumoured set may be based on is still up in the air.

On the one hand, the original animated movie is a beloved and well-known film that started the franchise with iconic character designs that the live-action movie is adapting with some changes. On the other, releasing a set based on the live-action film near its release in the summer of 2025 would be a tempting opportunity for synergy for both the LEGO Group and Universal Pictures.

With the updated rumour that the set would only be representing Toothless with no minifigures combined with the reveal of the live-action film's first trailer, it's clear that the rumoured model is playing it extremely safe. Take a look at the first official trailer for the film for some potentially crucial context.

The brief glimpse at character designs we see in the 2025 How to Train Your Dragon movie trailer, be they humans or dragons, have been adapted accordingly from their animated counterparts. Proportions have been shifted in such a way that minifigures based on the live-action film may not be the best representations of the animated characters.

That doesn't go for Toothless though. The draconic face of the franchise looks nearly the same as he does in the animated movie, with some minor changes to his proportions that are almost indiscernible. This spells good news for the rumoured LEGO set.

Choosing just Toothless for the rumoured LEGO How to Train Your Dragon set means that the LEGO Group would be covering all bases and depicting the live-action and animated versions of the dragon simultaneously. While nothing has been confirmed, it would be an ingenious move from the design team despite the reported lack of minifigures and a Hiccup to pair with Toothless.

Hopefully, an official update on LEGO How to Train Your Dragon will arrive soon following the start of the movie's marketing. It will be released on June 13, 2025, but the model has no rumoured release date at the time of writing. Treat all LEGO rumours with caution until an announcement is made.
