Sam Witwer came up with Darth Maul's Duel of the Fates LEGO remix

Voice actor Sam Witwer came up with Darth Maul's Duel of the Fates remix in LEGO Star Wars Rebuild the Galaxy: Pieces of the Past.

It's no secret that the Rebuild the Galaxy cast are almost all die-hard Star Wars and LEGO fans, with the voice of Sig Greebling, Gatan Matarazzo, always being quick to voice his excitement. As a show more designed for fans than anything else from a galaxy far, far away, it makes sense to draw on ideas from the cast.

Indeed, one of the many (many) meta jokes that only Star Wars fans will appreciate in the second season of Rebuild the Galaxy is when Darth Maul sings "It's so fabulous" to the tune of Duel of the Fates – the soundtrack to Maul's dramatic fight with Qui-Gon Jinn. That idea came from Maul's voice actor Sam Witwer, according to a recollection shared by Tony Revolori, the voice of Dev Greebling, having watched Witwer improv Maul’s musical talents.

“He was doing this moment where he was like, ‘Hey guys, wouldn’t it be funny if I sang the ‘Duel of the Fates’ theme with ‘It’s fabulous! It’s so fabulous’?’" remembered Revolori. "It was hilarious.”

Co-writer and executive producer on the series Benji Samit added to the story in an interview, saying: “The Maul voice is inherently so dark and twisted and evil-sounding – how do you put a nice spin on it?

"We played around. I remember that first session with Sam, we were just playing off different ways to do it, and he pretty quickly locked into it, and it is so, so good.”

It even got extended for a longer segment at a later date, with the writers bringing Witwer back to rerecord a longer version of the song. The popularity of Darth Maul, whether playing for comedy or tragedy, bodes well for his own animated show, confirmed at this year's Star Wars celebration – although we can't imagine Witwer, voicing Maul once again, will reprise more of the song.
