Star Wars fans are not happy with Matthew Vaughn's reboot comments

Kingsman and X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn has sparked outrage among Star Wars fans with his reboot suggestion.

Speaking on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Vaughn stated that he would be less keen to take on a Star Wars project nowadays, implying the franchise has diminished recently.

"For me, doing a Star Wars movie is to play with the characters I love," he explained. "If they said to me they’d reboot Star Wars and actually have Luke Skywalker, Solo, and Vader and do your version of it. Everyone would say you’re an idiot to try, but that would excite me.

“Why are the [‘Star Wars’] characters so hallowed that from 1977 you can’t re-do it for a new audience?” he continued. “Star Wars is the Skywalker family and that’s where I think they’ve gone wrong. They’ve forgot. They’ve done brilliantly in TV but it needs an epic new film. That’s what I would do.

"Everyone is going to go bat**** crazy but let’s bring it on. If you want a new generation, make the movie for them. The old generation, hopefully you make it well enough that they enjoy it.”

We're not quite sure what TV series and films Vaughn has been watching that haven't featured Luke, Han Solo, and Vader, with Solo: A Star Wars Story coming out in 2018, a dedicated TV show looking at the relationship between Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi in 2022, appearances from Vader (and Anakin) in Ahsoka in 2023, and multiple appearances from Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian over the last few. years, to name but a few.

The sequel trilogy was, in fact, centred around the Skywalker family through Leia, Luke, and Kylo Ren, as well as returning to the Big Bad of the original and prequel trilogies, Emperor Palpatine. Even without a reboot, the Star Wars franchise has certainly not forgotten any of its original characters.

The reaction to Vaughn's comments have been far from positive, with Star Wars fans letting the internet know, in no uncertain terms, that they don't want a reboot.

"No reboot is necessary," wrote one person on X (formerly Twitter). "You are missing the fact that it’s a time-less story. Meaning anyone/all generations can relate to it."

"If there is one thing that should never be rebooted or remade it’s Star Wars," added another. "We have an incredible generational saga and a reboot will NEVER receive the same love and emotional connection that the IP currently has!"

With plans for a Harry Potter TV series on Max, remaking the original books, rumours of an MCU reboot, and a cinematic reboot for The Lord of the Rings, it's possible that Star Wars could be rebooted – one day. At the moment, there's not even a whisper of it out there that we can see and certainly plenty enough stories from a galaxy far, far away in the making already.
